My name is Matthew Naimi and I am running to serve you on the Detroit City Council. I have spent the past four years developing the Recycle Here! program for the City of Detroit. Along the way, I have worked with non-profits, block clubs, schools, City Departments and City Government to create the first comprehensive recycling program in Detroit History. I realized that one person, who listens to and has the support of the community, can make a difference. This journey prepared and inspired me to seek your support to serve on the Detroit City Council. I will listen to issues, understand what needs to be done, and implement programs and policies that will make Detroit a better place to live.
Council by Districts:
This is needed and necessary. This change to our City Government will create more accountability of elected officials and accessibility for our citizens. The 2009 City Council will be elected at-large, but will be involved in implementing this change during this term. I will work with the community to make sure the Districts are drawn fairly.
Recycling:
I have worked tirelessly to provide recycling options for the City of Detroit. I will bring my deep understanding of this issue inside City Council, where I can steer Detroit to create a smart and effective Recycling program. Recyclable material is a resource. I will ensure that the City of Detroit protects this resource.
Urban Agriculture:
This is a major part of the future success of Detroit. Currently, the City of Detroit has no policies in place to make this a viable industry. I will work to create an agriculture zoning system as well as a City of Detroit Department of Agriculture. This will help create both public and private sector Green Jobs, while helping us with nutrition, sustainability, and food security.
Illegal dumping and abandoned homes:
This is one of the most talked about issues in every single community meeting that I have attended during the last ten years. My experience in the waste and recycling industry, as well as my participation in numerous community cleanups, gives me a clear picture of how we can target and clean up blight. I want to use environmental fines to create a community cleanup fund that will help block clubs keep themselves clean
and tidy.
We invite questions and comments.
